The location of the Rugby Gateway development is alongside junction 1 of the M6 and was originally agricultural land. Collins were employed from the outset to undertake the enabling earthworks contract. The first job was to clear the land of trees and hedges, followed by the extensive topsoil strip. The site was phased in such a way to control water run-off and maintain key programme targets. The earthworks were undertaken in accordance with a strict specification provided by Crossfield Consulting, who were validating the works. We provided a testing grid for the site, coordinated testing technicians and compiled all the geotechnical reports. All control of line and level was predominately provided by our fleet of bulldozers and excavators having Trimble 3D GPS machine control. This was supported by our engineering team, undertaking independent checks. The layers of fill were placed at a depth of 225mm, with a maximum uplift of 60 layers. To achieve the specified minimum 95% Maximum Dry Density of the fill layers, the moisture contents were controlled and compacted sufficiently with Self-propelled 19T vibratory rollers.

On completion of the enabling contract, Collins were successful at securing the earthworks for the 5 industrial unit developments that followed. Winvic were the principal contractor for H&M, DHL and Hermes units, with Bowmer & Kirkland being the PC for the two spec units, RG-2 and RG-3. This development has been a great achievement for Collins, providing almost 3 years of work and a great addition to our portfolio.
